Red BACK SOUTH TRAIL Completed 6/12/26
Palisades MTB broke ground on the 3-mile Red Back South Trail in Sterling Forest State Park in September 2024. With its completion, Sterling Forest now boasts 15 miles of mountain bike trails, offering everything from fast, flowy singletrack to seriously technical riding.
To accelerate construction and deliver a high-quality trail experience, Palisades MTB partnered with leading professional trail builder Tahawus Trails. Their crew excavated rocky terrain, shaped berms and trail features, and constructed beautiful stone bridges spanning stream crossings.
In addition, PMTB's Get "Stuff" Done Crew (the GSD Crew) contributed more than 1,300 hours of volunteer labor, helping with corridor clearing, finish work, rock armoring, drainage improvements, and countless other tasks that brought the trail to life.
Red Back South represents hundreds of hours of planning, field visits, fundraising, and collaboration dating back to 2021. The project was made possible through the partnership of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, Tahawus Trails, the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, and many dedicated volunteers and supporters.
Funding for this project was provided in part by the Hudson River Valley Greenway, Tenafly Bicycle Workshop, Athletic Brewing Company, grants, private donors, and riders like YOU!
Thank you for helping us build and maintain more places to ride. Enjoy the trail, respect other users, and leave it better than you found it.
